LOWLY BAGLAENS

Diversifying from the synth-driven dreampop of their criminally underrated 2017 debut Heba, Danish collective and Bella Union signees Lowly have shared 'Baglaens', the adventurous lead track from their sophomore album Hifalutin. Opening with Far-Eastern-inspired instrumentation, 'Baglaens' kicks in with a simplistic ebbing bass line and a tumbling synth sequence, which slot carefully between a shuffling dream beat as singer Soffie Viemose's stunning vocal performance steals the show. At times mirroring the experimental and operatic qualities of the Cocteau Twins' iconic front woman Elizabeth Fraser, but without the effects, Lowly hint at more surprises to come from their second album. They explain, "If you stick to just what you know, your music, your art or whatever your situation is becomes stagnant, and we wouldn’t like to miss out on anything, just because we felt too comfortable.” Hifalutin will arrive on the 12th of April. -Holly Mullineaux
